Sodas. Cakes. Your mom’s homemade peanut butter and jam. These treats are surely mouth watering to many people out there. To have them in your mouth is like being in heaven.
Unfortunately, there is a high price to pay for the sweet bliss they give. They are chock full of sugar, which has been found out to have many negative effects on our bodies.
Almost all of the food we have to day has sugar in it. Whether it is natural or artificial, sugar, although giving a temporary energy boost, causes a variety of dangerous medical conditions.
Before those medical conditions show up, there are other symptoms that can help you determine if you need to cut back on those sugary treats for a bit. These are:
Lack of Energy
The neuropeptide responsible for a healthy communication in your brain that is related to our sleep/wake cycle is called orexins. They form proteins in our brain.
These neurotransmitters are highly sensitive to the sugar levels in our body. When there is an increase of sugar level, it inhibits the communication they provide, which then leads to a state of tiredness or fatigue.
To those complaining of always feeling tired, it could be a sign of too much sugar in your system.
This is a no brainer, since common knowledge would tell you that if you eat too much sugar, the excess energy they bring to our body will most likely be unused. This leads to them being stored in our bodies in the form of fat, which in turn increases of weight.
As if that were not enough, too much sugar intake can stop production of a hormone called leptin. Leptin helps us regulate our food intake by signaling our body that it has had its full. So when it is suppressed, our bodies are not told that it has had enough.
Rises in blood sugar can also cause a spike in insulin levels in our blood. Insulin is a hormone released by the pancreas to make sure that the sugar in our body is used as energy. If there is a spike and too much sugar is converted and stored, our bodies will then start to crave more sugar, even though that it does need it at the moment.
Bad news for all those with a sweet tooth; sugar has been linked to a wide array of cancers. Since sugar causes an abnormal spike in insulin, and worse, inflammation in different parts of our body, they can also trigger mutations and an increased reproduction of irregular cells.
What’s more, sugar is the primary source of energy of cancer cells.

Impaired Brain Functioning
In Neuroscience, a journal dedicated to the science of the nervous system, there was a study conducted to see what would happen to mice which were fed with the western diet that so many people follow. There result was that after just 2 months, those mice suffered from reduced brain abilities.
The reason behind this is because sugar has the ability to affect the neurotransmitters in our brains, especially ones that are related to memory and learning.
So to those parents with children who are still studying, it might be a good idea to regulate your child’s sugar intake to make sure they are fully capable of absorbing what they learn at school. If your child is having problems and they love sweets, it might be a sign of too much sugar in their system.
Anyone who is concerned with the health of their skin would do best to cut back on their sugar. This is because sugar affects our skin in a variety of ways; first, it affects the collagen in our skin. Collagen is the reason why our skin has its structure and texture. A normal amount of sugar is good, since they normally bind to collagen so that they circulate in our body well. But a large amount of sugar can cause collagen cells to be stuck, which in turn leads to skin tissues being stiff; translation, they can become fine lines, wrinkles and other skin problems.
Inflammation is also caused by sugar, and if it happens to the skin can lead to dermatitis and acne. Sugar can also cause hormone imbalances, which can lead to a break out of pimples on the surface of our skin.
Persistent Cold and Flu
Sugar can cause problems for your immune system since they stop the white blood cells in our body from doing their job. The white blood cells are our natural defenders, our body’s soldiers that stave off any invasion from unwanted sicknesses. If they cannot function as well as they should, our bodies are highly vulnerable to the many viruses and bacteria around us, which in turn can lead to sickness. Having returning colds can be a sign of too much sugar.
Abnormal Sugar/Carbs cravings
There is a reason why many companies love to fill their products with sugar, it is because sugar is highly addictive. When we consume just a bit, sugar then triggers our body to release a hormone called dopamine, which brings us pleasure and relief. And just like any addiction, our body will crave for more sugar just to feel that way again.
What’s more, our body naturally develops a tolerance for sugar, so you have to consume more just to feel better again.

What Can be done?
Since the amounts of sugar in commercially prepared products nowadays is way more than we need, it is best to avoid them altogether. If you cannot stop yourself from consuming sugar, fruits are healthy alternatives to get that sugary fix you need. They are also chock full of vitamins and minerals that are good for the body. You should base the amount of fruits you consume on your body size, weight, and age to avoid over consumption.
If you are already having sugar cravings, there are alot of ways to overcome them. These are:
- Minimize the amount of sugar you take each day.
- Ignore products that are full of sugar, whether natural or artificial.
- Some probiotics have the ability to help the digestive system process sugar and regulate the bacteria inside our guts. It’s a good idea to see which ones do those things to help recover from a sugar addiction.
- Exercise. The best way to burn excess sugar before it becomes fat.
- Replace your favorite treats with a healthier diet.
- Drink lots of water on a regular basis to get rid of excess sugar and toxins.
